Lee County

The Lee County Commission proposed to raise the millage rate from 13.95-- the same mathematically incorrect rate as in the previous three years-- to 16.95. At a 10/13 public hearing the Commission ultimately adopted a rate of 15.95.

The mathematically correct rate is 17.766. The county budget will be underfunded, at least on paper, by approximately $1.067 million on an $18,602,944 budget.

According to local news coverage, "That [the 2-mill increase] [is] not enough to make up for overspending in recent years that left Lee County with nearly nothing to fall back on in an emergency.

"The Administrator and Commissioners say the tax increase should have been more and say they may need to raise taxes again next year."
