Morgan County

Summary: Morgan County will operate on a 2005 budget of $11,624,270. Of that amount, $6,206,327 will be funded by property tax dollars. The County Commission will adopt a millage rate of 10.70, the same rate as last year.

The mathematically-correct millage rate is 9.635.

The arbitrarily high rate proposed by the Commission will overtax Morgan County property owners by at least $685,000 more than is necessary to fully fund this year's budget.

The owner of a $150,000** home in Morgan County will pay $642 in county property taxes, about $63.90 higher than what would be required with a mathematically-correct millage rate.
