Polk County

The Polk County Commission adopted two millage rates-- one for unincorporated Polk County and one for properties within the county's cities-- to partially fund its $19,212,485 budget this year. The portion of the budget to be funded by property tax dollars is $9,107,000.

Based on a Net Tax Digest of $877,486,567 and certain presumptions (information provided by Polk County lacked certain secondary details), the mathematical millage rate for unincorporated Polk County is 10.379; however, the Commission adopted a slightly deficient rate of 10.377.

The Commission adopted a rate of 11.753 for incorporated properties; however, the mathematical millage is lower, at 10.377.

The total revenue expected to be generated by both millage rates is $9,337,261, $230,260 more than the budget requires.

According to these numbers, the incorporated parts of the county are being overtaxed by a total of $436,040 or $82.54 for the owner of a $150,000 assessed value home (not considering exemptions).

Conversely, the unincorporated portions are being undertaxed by a total of $205,779 or $22.03 on the $150,000 home.
